Brittin's Got Talent (and also Arrogance)
Corestar’s DUAL methodology identifies the cultural traits which cause business to fail. We’ve indexed the digital footprint of 1000+ companies on a scale of:
Confident to Doubtful
Orchestrated to Uncoordinated
Relatable to Arrogant
Energised to Lethargic
As well as analysing businesses, we can uncover insights on C-Suite performance. Here’s what we found on the BBC’s appointment of Matt Brittin to the post of Director-General.
• Doubtful: Brittin inherits an organisation riddled with doubt. Should it keep the licence fee system? How does it compete against streaming giants? The tech playbook usually relies on disruption. If Brittin uses "disrupt or die" rhetoric, he will amplify internal anxiety rather than resolve it.
• Uncoordinated: The BBC is a notoriously complex matrix of regional hubs, legacy broadcast divisions, and isolated digital product teams. The "complexity tax" here is immense.
• Arrogant: The classic Silicon Valley "tech saviour" complex is the single greatest threat to his tenure. The BBC's traditional creative and journalistic base is deeply allergic to being told how to do content by a tech executive.
• Lethargic: Brittin naturally brings a low-lethargy footprint. The challenge will be injecting proactive initiative without breaking the editorial compliance structures.
Will Brittin revive the BBC?
Matt Brittin's Google footprint shows a highly capable structural orchestrator who generates massive internal momentum. However, his DUAL profile flashes a critical warning light on the Arrogance axis. His inability to read the room during moments of severe public scrutiny indicates a risk when transitioning to highly politicized or legacy environments. If he brings this same insulated, Big Tech defensiveness to future roles, it will rapidly compromise stakeholder trust.
Brittin's immediate priority must be containing the Doubt dimension. He should announce early, highly visible structural integrations to prove his tech credentials (lowering Uncoordination), while simultaneously making a highly public, humble commitment to legacy editorial values (lowering Arrogance and Doubt).
